A Morning in the Life

Monday, May 16, 2011

Some of my friends ask me now that I am a SAHM (stay at home mom) what my mornings are like.
Here is a typical one (i.e. what happened today):

6:00 am - The bean starts to coo in her crib and neither one of us wants to get up. This is a tricky time for Peter -- he generally needs to pee around 6:00 a.m., but if the baby is a little bit awake he has to wait, making his final 45 minutes of sleep very challenging.
6:30 am - The bean starts to cry so I get up and feed her, then we play her favorite game, chase the dog around the apartment.  Peter employs several techniques to sleep through this, including: pillow over head; arm over ear; and (unprincipled) meditation.
7:30 am - I beg Peter to get up and play with the bean so I can go back to bed for a little bit.  He accepts the challenge and gets out of bed and lies on the floor IMMEDIATELY NEXT TO (caution to the wind) the bean while she kicks and babbles and scratches and rolls.  Peter utilizes several semi-sleeping defense strategies such as: keep baby at arms-length and covering his own head with a pillow.  Eventually he wakes and plays aggressively with the bean to make up for lost time.
8:30 am - Peter gets ready for work and I take the bean and the dog out for a walk.
9:00 am - Try to get the bean down for her nap. Peter insists that whenever he is around for this, the bean is easily pacified, I think (and know) otherwise.

That's pretty much it. In between there is some diaper changing, spitting up, cooing, babbling and lots and lots of laughing.
