And Your Husband??

During the week I often take the little bean out on afternoon excursion. We go to Barnes and Noble, Riverside park and of course we also go to her weekly swimming and gymnastics classes. Sometimes I'll get to talking to the moms of the other toddlers. Those conversations usually go something like this:

"What is your baby's name?"
"Zelda, and your baby's name?"
"{Random baby name here}, how old is Zelda?"
"She is just 17 months, how old is your baby?"
"He/she is {random baby age here}"
"Do you guys live nearby?"
"No, we live about 20 blocks north, but we come down here a lot."
"Oh, and your husband. What does he do for a living?"
"He works in midtown."
"Where in midtown."
"He works on 55th street."
 "Oh."

I'm not stupid, I know these moms want to know what Peter does for a living so they can size me up, estimate our net worth. Lots of ladies see a stay at home mom and immediately want to understand how that lady can afford or can justify staying home. The only thing I have to say to those women is, "it is none of your business, sorry." Of course the ladies we have play dates with know what Peter does for a living, it comes up in conversation. It comes up organically and isn't asked in the first few minutes of meeting me and little Z.

Maybe next time somebody asks me what Peter does for a living I'll just have them guess.
